Why is the new LDL calculator more accurate?
The LDL cholesterol ("bad cholesterol") value reported on your lipid panel is usually not directly measured. Instead, it is estimated using a formula from your total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. This is because direct LDL measurement is more expensive and not always necessary for routine screening.
Unfortunately, most labs still use the old formula from 1972, which can given inaccurate results, especially when your triglycerides levels are high.
The new formula uses a more accurate method and fixes this problem. It is validated on 1.3 million patients and is now recommended by 2026 American Heart Association guidelines as the preferred method for your LDL calculation.
